About the book:

When Calvin discovers a mysterious cabin in the woods, it seems like the world’s coolest clubhouse! But there’s more to this place than he knows. Hidden inside the cabin is a portal to another world, and Calvin’s not the first person in his family to use it. Filled with action, adventure, mystery, and magic, this story is sure to entertain kids and parents alike.

My Thoughts: As a volunteer librarian at the school my children attend, I try to read children’s and young adult novels often so I can recommend books to the students.  Calvin Sparks and the Crossing to Cambria sounded like a novel many children would enjoy.  I was right on the spot!  Calvin Sparks is curious, smart, adventurous, and brave, all good things we want to develop in our own children.  The adventure and fantasy draws the reader into a magical world and provides the ultimate escape from daily life of school work and chores.  I would definitely recommend Calvin Sparks and the Crossing to Cambria to children of all ages and adults who enjoy fantasy novels.  If you like the works of Harry Potter, The Bridge to Terabithia, The Lightning Thief, or Eragon, you will love Calvin Sparks and the Crossing to Cambria!

About the author:

Rusty discovered his passion for writing at an early age. When he was in the fourth grade he was given an assignment to write, illustrate, and bind a book. He liked it so much, he wrote three––most of which were pretty awful. One of those books, however, received accolades at a district writing competition.

Originally from California, Rusty is no stranger to apple boxes and packaging tape. He attended three different middle schools and two different high schools between California and Utah. He lived in Guatemala, learned to speak Spanish, and eventually made his way back to Utah, where he graduated from the University of Utah. Rusty was the editor of a monthly Utah newspaper and currently pays the bills doing graphic design and marketing.

On the weekends, Rusty stays up late playing games and watching movies with his family. He and his wife, Jayne, reside in the beautiful mountains in Heber Valley with their six children.

About Katie

Katie lives in Southeast Idaho, with her husband and 4 children. She thrives in a clean and orderly home, though her home isn't always as such. She finds great satisfaction in seeing others enjoy her homemade cooking and baking. She has experience working in the field of mental health and often uses positive self talk to get through her busy days. If she ever has free time, it is spent reading.

I also loved reading Calvin Sparks and the Crossing to Cambria. It was a needed break from all the adult books I’ve been reading. And I think it portrays great values for kids without any inapropriate scenes. It kept my attention and wonder throughout.
