Jasper Adventures: The Glacier Skywalk

abbydell©_JasperSW14_009 When someone asks you if you want to go check out a Glacier the first thing that comes to mind is what am I going to need: a harness, pick axe, ice shoes, harness. Well if that’s what you were wondering the answer is no you don’t need any of those things. Of course, going with one of my best friends who literally just went on a huge glacier expedition of her own in Montana. So either way I was prepared; though, I wasn’t prepared the humbling experience which occurred.abbydell©_JasperSW14_014

We got to the skywalk early and decided to take a little hike. It was an experience I’ll never forget. Standing in front of this giant glacier made me feel so small, like everything I had been worrying about suddenly didn’t matter. Staring at the glaciers, that are slowly evading, it made me appreciate everything so much more, and reminded me that every thing we do, as people, has an impact. Even the smallest step could be catastrophic. It was a beautiful and humbling experience.

The Glacier Skywalk

abbydell©_JasperSW14_013If you expect to get an up close and personal experience with an actual glacier, the Skywalk isn’t for you. Glacier Adventures do have other opportunities for that, but this isn’t one. But if you want to be amazed and humbled by seeing something that affects our ecosystem, then this is for you. When we finished the small hike we headed back to the lodge and got on the bus to head to the Skywalk. When we got to the Skywalk I wasn’t really sure what to expect and was delightfully thrilled by what I found. When we arrived they handed us small handheld recorders. As we would move through the tour we would press the appropriate number and hear/learn about the history of the glaciers. It was actually beneficial and I learned a lot about the skywalk and glaciers.

Five things to remember when going to Glacier National Park/Skywalk

1. Go early. If you don’t parking will be full, and it might be hard to find a space. 2. The Skywalk isn’t actually in Jasper. You hit the skywalk before Jasper. 3. It doesn’t open until 9 A.M 4. Bring snacks. They have a restaurant inside the lodge, but not while you’re out on the hike or at the skywalk. 5. Bring a light sweater. It was a bit chilly and I was grateful to have a jacket to keep me warm while I was there.   A shout out to Abby Dell Photography, for capturing such an amazing moment!
