The Host by Stephenie Meyer – Book Review

 The Host
Ok people. Some of you out there are probably thinking, hey thanks for reviewing this book that came out 6 years ago. And to tell you the truth, I hadn’t ever given this book any thought until recently when it jumped out at me at a used book store. And sci-fi isn’t typically a genre I read, but I did read all the Twilight books. Having said all that, I really loved The Host!
So we can’t really talk about The Host without touching on Stephenie Meyer, and then that all leads to Twilight. I’m sorry, but it does. So let’s just get it out there.
First Stephenie. I have absolute admiration for any woman with 3 kids who writes books. And then they are best selling books which get made into movies. Which are multi million dollar successes. I don’t even remember 2008 when I had 3 small kids, and this mother of 3 wrote The Host in between the Twilight novelsAND she wrote her first Twilight novel without any prior writing experience.
So, whether you enjoyed her other books or not, that is freakin’ amazing! IMO.
Fast forward to 2014 (I still have 3 kids and so does Stephenie…only one of us is a millionaire).
I find myself, more and more, turning to YA genre books for my entertainment fix. I have trouble paying attention to anything the least bit tedious or dry. Step aside Canadian literature and Self Help aisles! Make room for Divergent! Hunger Games! Harry Potter! Deviations! (see Crystal). I did make an exception when I read the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series. But the final book was tedious.
So when I read the first page of The Host, and couldn’t put it down, I was enamoured!
The Host has great characters, angst, emotion, drama, romance and aliens! All things that are FUN to read about. It’s creative and fresh and touching. I loved being wrapped up in that future world. Even if humans were nearly extinct! And the fact that two of those humans were attractive hunky males doesn’t bother me much.
When I first read the premise of the book, a young woman named Melanie taken over by a ‘host’ alien, I was skeptical. However I found Melanie and her Host, Wanderer, completely relatable.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the world in Stephanie’s imagination. I enjoyed her concept of other worlds and how they might exist.
The Host kept my attention from start to finish! Imagine my delight when I realized that Stephenie herself has confirmed plans for a sequel, and then a trilogy.
While my heart still belongs to Edward, I’ve made some room for a slippery little alien and her human friends.
