Fun Books For Elementary Kids
by Lara and Emery Ellis
Emery and I were delighted to have the opportunity to read and review these wonderful selections from Raincoast Books!
Just as a little bit of background info, Emery is 7 and finishing grade 1. She loves to read and write her own little stories and practice her spelling words. She also enjoys soccer (sometimes), wearing skirts (even in the middle of winter), and eating popsicles. Anytime.
Emery was already in bed for the night when I realized our package of books had arrived at our front door. I couldn’t stop myself from running into her room and letting her pick out a book to read together!

We started with Isabella: Star of the Story.
We took turns reading pages as we went along. Isabella’s a girl who loves the library and uses her imagination to tell us a little bit about the stories she loves. There are many references to great children’s literature throughout. Isabella is energetic and a little bit sassy. A huge appeal to this audience.
Emery: I love the little girl in the story. The illustrations (we use grown up words sometimes) are awesome. Isabella is funny and I really like her purple hair.
I also appreciated that the author included a brief synopsis of the literature mentioned throughout the book, at the end.
This was Emery’s favourite book!

The next day we read Snatchabook.
This was a great book to read out loud! It has a wonderful rhythm and rhyme. It is about a little bunny girl who discovers that the neighbourhood books are being stolen by a sneaky Snatchabook!
The story is sweet and funny with a bit of mystery solving. It’s a book that most young kids can relate to, about having their favorite stories read to them at bedtime.
Emery and I both enjoyed the colorful illustrations.
Emery:I like how Eliza likes to read (the main bunny, and Snatchabook mystery solver). The story was interesting. I really liked the illustrations.
Personally, I liked how the story moved along and was fun for us to read together. I find a lot of kids books tedious after the first few pages, but not in this case!

And finally we read, If You Want to See a Whale.
This was definitely my favourite book, but not Emery’s. We both agreed that the illustrations were beautiful. It was just a bit slower paced than the other two. Isabella is more Emery’s speed.
Me: This book is poetic and whimsical, which are two of my favourite things in a children’s book. It’s about a little boy and his dog and how you might get distracted when you are watching for a whale.
The illustrations are a wonderful and important part of the story. It’s a quick read, but one that I will go back to often, to enjoy the calming images and light humour. This book really brings a smile to my face! I just may keep it for myself.

Thank you Raincoast Books! All of these books are available at Chapters Indigo and Canadian book stores near you.
