Ballerina Fashionista: Vintage Feel

Occasionally I get fashion block.  It’s sort of like writer’s block only with clothes.  I will look in my closet and my mind goes blank.  It’s times like these that I turn to the internet to save my clothing woes.  A few months ago, such a time happened.  I googled tween fashion blog to see if there were others like me out there.  Well, about the only name that came up was Tavi Gevinson.  No longer a tween and now a big time editor of online magazine Rookie Mag, Tavi was a pioneer in the tween fashion movement.

The day I found Tavi’s old blog, The Style Rookie, I spent hours looking through her archives.  She definitely has a different style than I do.  Tavi tended to dress in artistic runway fashions on the daily and even said her peers made fun of her until she was famous.  I would never make fun of others fashion choices, even if I didn’t particularly like their outfit.  However I must say I wouldn’t copy Tavi’s outfits piece for piece.

When looking at runway fashions or the likes of Tavi, don’t completely write them off as being too out there for you.  Instead, look for elements you like such as color choices, pattern mixings, drape, or theme.  Tavi tended to go for vintage fashions mixed with moody, angst.  Well, angst isn’t really my thing but I love vintage inspired looks.  I decided to try something new.

While there is nothing particularly vintage or new about a skirt, shirt, and cardigan, adding the fold-over socks and thick headband gave the outfit a vintage feel.

In other news, the snow has completely melted super early this year leaving us with ugly, dead looking grass.  My little brother wanted to be in a picture.  He chose his own outfit….

Cardigan // Graphic Tee (similar)// Skirt (old) // // Ballet Flats // Pearl Stud Earrings // Bow Ring

I sort of felt uncomfortable when wearing this out because it was just slightly out of my norm.  I got used to it though and the socks with flats grew on me.  Don’t feel the need to copy my outfit piece for piece just like I didn’t completely copy Tavi’s.  Just go to your closet, pick a skirt, cardigan, and graphic tee that somewhat match.  Throw on a headband and some fold-over, white socks with flats and you are good to go!  Points for vintage flair if you wear a pin on your cardi.

XOXO,
