Sometimes the day to day life as a mother is very mundane, until your kid says something hilarious and you think, gosh you are the coolest kid ever.
I don’t know if I have mentioned this here before, but I really like learning about my family history. It may sound nerdy, but I will admit. I really only wanted to look at a pedigree chart and be able to keep track of the relatives my grandparents were talking about.
Then, one day I was talking to my grandma after a traumatic event in high school. Tramatic for me, that is. You see, after an early morning swimming practise at school I wore my swim team sweat pants to my classes that day. I thought they were all cute and casual, as they had white paw prints on the bum. Remember when that was a thing? Well, one kid who shall remain nameless, decided it would be hilarious to pull my pants down while I was talking to some friends. I was so embarrassed. Plus, I was wearing silky leopard print underwear. Everyone laughed and laughed at my humiliation.
I came home from school that day and was telling my visiting grandma about how horrible it was, and added in the details of the underwear and how everyone commented on it.
Her response?
Well, at least they were cute. The same thing happened to me while I was in school, except it was during the war and there were rations on elastic, so we wore these ugly button up underwear that gave you a saggy bum.
Point taken. You win that one Grandma.
So, this little story, while cute, got me thinking that my Grandma lived in a totally different world than I did. I had no concept of rations. Brothers going off to war in Japan and not coming back. Husbands in the Army, off to training for months at a time. Her life was so different than mine, and yet, ours overlapped for so many years, it seems surreal.
Now, every time I see her, I ask stories. Just simple questions lead to amazing stories. What were you doing in this picture? How did you met your friend? Where did you live in this picture? Why do your kids call you ‘Mother’ (a more formal name, in my mind, for the much more caring and casual parent. As opposed to ‘Dad’ for the more formal and stand off-ish father). Each question brings out the best stories.
So, I talked about the app One Day before, interviewing my kid. Here is another movie we made the other night:
I can’t wait to turn the camera on my Grandma, my mom, and if I get the chance, my husbands Grandma in Oklahoma. The history of our family members is important to each of us, whether we appreciate it or not.
What is one question you would like to ask your relatives?
If you want to try out the (free) app, you can download it in the app store. Did I mention its free? Also, check out the amazing giveaway. Who doesn’t want money?
