Big Hero 6 Sugar Cookies

Gifted

Don’t you just love when something seemingly random happens at just the right time and really touches your life??? Here is a little back story about me. My son recently went through hours of assessments with his wonderful psychologist. After the long process he was given multiple codes, one of which is that he is extremely gifted/talented. We always knew he was bright, but there is something about having the official report, getting the official answers that makes it all seem that much more real. I instantly felt pressure to make sure I, as his mother, was doing everything to help him reach his potential, but at the same time make sure he is happy. Then there is a part of me that worries. Growing up is hard enough as it is, I hope that he isn’t singled out and targeted because he is ‘too smart’ or ‘nerdy’ or whatever label they decide to throw at him.

I have always loved Disney! Some of my favorite movies are Disney and most of the songs in my head are from Disney movies. I’ve never been to Disneyland or Disney World but I am dying to take my kids.  We are Disney Obsessed in this house to say the least. So like most every person on the planet we were eagerly awaiting the theatrical release of Disney’s latest movie Big Hero 6. We were not disappointed! If you haven’t seen it you must go!

 Big Hero 6

Here is a quick recap of the awesome movie. There is a young boy named Hiro, who is extremely smart/gifted. His older brother is also very smart, and tries to help Hiro direct his intelligence into a more meaningful path than the one he is currently heading on. One day there is an accident and Hiro’s brother dies. Hiro is understandably devastated. However, he recruits his brothers ‘nerdy’,  aka super smart as my son called them, friends and his brother’s robot to battle an evil force that is now in their city.

I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this movie, and perhaps it was because of the recent results we got for my son, but I was incredibly touched. My son left this movie and was obviously inspired too. He likes to take some time to think things over before he really talks about it. But sure enough the next morning after seeing the movie we had this little conversation

J: “Want to know what I really liked about that movie last night?”
Me: “Of course”
J: “Those super heroes didn’t really have any super powers, they just were super smart and made really cool super suits”
Me: “You are completely right”
J: “I’m pretty smart too aren’t I?”
Me: “Yes sweetie you are”
J: “Whoa, wait… [my teacher] is unlocking my super power isn’t he?!?”

That was the boost I needed. It’s called being GIFT-ed… its a gift. I was getting to caught up in all the negative labels that could be thrown at my son by his peers and allowed that to over shadow the good. I want him to always be filled with the confidence that movie helped him see. Yes he is different then his peers, but different is good, and its his special super power.

We have since become obsessed with Big Hero 6. It gets talked about daily. So the other day we noticed that our cookie jar was empty. There was only one solution… BAYMAX SUGAR COOKIES!  I used my grandmothers sugar cookie recipe. (It is my all time favourite).

After we made our cookies it was just a matter of adding white frosting and some chocolate eyes to make our very own Baymax faces. The boys loved them because they were Big Hero 6 and I loved them because they are so easy. I’m not very good at decorating cookies so simple designs are my hero!
