Stylish Play Clothes
Finding clothing that is stylish but still allows for running, jumping, and climbing is the holy grail for tween girls. I know from experience. It’s like clothing designers decided that we are too old for childlike exuberance and should be dressing to attract attention. They are wrong of course. We tweens are still children who like to be active and play. We like to run, jump, swing, throw, kick and so forth, however, we are also starting to care more about our appearance and want to look nice while we are playing.
With this in mind, imagine my delight when my mom found CiCi Bean. Cici Bean is a tween girl clothing line that specializes in playwear that is well made and on trend. Their fabrics are a nice, heavy knit that is flattering when worn and never looks sloppy. The best part is their motto, “Helping girls celebrate their awesomeness everyday,” if you needed another reason to love .
They sent me the Be Brave Tunic and Flutter Skinnies to try out and basically, I heart them. The tunic and skinnies worn together are cute enough that all you need is a pair of ballet flats to complete the look. But of course, the pieces are very versatile and can be worn with other items you likely already have in your closet.
I added a simple jean jacket, necklace, aviator sunglasses, and traded the ballet flats for a pair of slip on chambray athletic shoes for a trendy, casual look.
Here I switched out the Flutter Skinnies in change for camo leggings and added combat boots for a polished, grunge vibe.
I toyed with wearing the tunic as a dress with boot socks and riding boots. I liked this look but it’s not really functional for playing. Maybe out to dinner or something like that?
I love me some chambray and this shirt went perfectly with the leggings.
A cozy gray sweater over a white tee would be perfect for cooler days.
Perhaps my favorite look of all was pairing the skinnies with a mustard sweater. My mom suggested it and I was like, “Plum and Mustard?! Eww,” but then I saw it together and realized, yet again, that my mom was right.

And if you were wondering why the leggings are called the Flutter Skinnies, here is why. Cute amiright?
I did this shoot at a local park and it was very clear to me that these clothes were made to play in. Between climbing fences, kicking rocks, rolling in leaves, and chasing squirrels, I left looking like I just put them on. These pieces will be regular staples in my wardrobe from this day forward.
