How To Get Beachy Waves With Hot Rollers

When the beachy waves trend was first getting started (the second time–in the late 2000s, not in the 1970s…) my hair was growing out from being quite short and I did not have a small enough barreled curling iron to achieve the look quite right. The smaller barrels are better for shorter hair, because they create tighter curls. A loose curl on short hair is almost non-existent.

Being frugal as I am, I didn’t want to go out and get a smaller clip-less curling wand or traditional curling iron. I also never used either of these tools enough to really be proficient in curling my hair (without several burns and curse words along the way). I have since become much better with these tools, but you now have the history of how this video came to be.

Here are some pro’s for getting beachy waves with hot rollers vs. a curling iron, straightener or clip-less wand.

  • Less chance of burning oneself…badly at least…since you’re rolling the curler up and down, compared to trying to determine left and right in a mirror, as you would with a curling iron/straightener/clip-less wand.
  • If you already own hot rollers and don’t want to buy an additional tool, this method saves you some money.
  • Could be faster for you, if your good with a set of hot rollers.
  • Longer lasting curl, because the hot rollers provide longer contact time with the hair than the other mentioned tools.
  • More root volume, because the curlers are chilling RIGHT at your scalp, whereas the other tools just cannot get that close due to their extreme heat.

And here are some tips not mentioned in the video:

  • Don’t include your long bangs in the curlers like I did. They are going to be too short to control the curl very well and will end up looking more like pageant hair. Instead, take a small roller (while hot) and use it like a curling iron. OR, use a curling iron for this part, so you can control how it’s going to curl. If you have very short bangs, skip the curling altogether.
  • To get the ultimate trendy look, curl your hair a side, slightly off of a middle part. When you take out your rollers, re-part your hair in the true middle. The effect will be a voluminous feathering away from the middle of your face. Much like this:

Here’s a couple cell phone shots of my current hair in this style achieved using hot rollers. It’s grown quite a bit since the video! And PS, this is Day 5 hair. So stop washing your hair so much already.
