Why?
I’ve documented 6 days of unwashed hair to help anyone wishing to wash her hair less. Why would you want to wash your hair less???
For me, the answer is less product, less damage, less work, and most importantly, more time to spend in places other than the bathroom. As a working mom with a toddler running around, the more time I can carve out, the better for everyone’s sanity.
To begin, I washed my hair and blow dried it on Day 1 and filmed the first video on Day 2. In this video, I talk about the hair powder that I make and use (instead of store bought dry shampoo) and show an quick, easy hair style to get you through Day 2…without washing your hair.
Caution:
Some words of advice as you watch this video series: it takes about a month for your hair to adjust to a new washing regimen. The more you wash your hair, the more it produces oil. If your hair seems like it needs to be washed daily, it’s most likely because you have been washing it daily. If you begin to train it to be washed less, than it will eventually need to be washed less. These statements exclude anyone working in an environment where they may end up with chemicals, biohazard materials, or bodily fluids in their hair on a daily basis. Not only do I feel sorry for your hair, but I do not attempt to convince you to wash it less
For everyone who is sitting at a desk, going to the gym regularly, and/or staying at home with a bunch of rug rats; this is for you! I hope you enjoy watching my hair…evolve/mature/become like a fine wine/transform. May you have the courage to give it a go.

DIY Dry Shampoo
As mentioned in the video, here is the hair powder recipe. I have purchased both $3 and $30 bottles of dry shampoo, and I still think this stuff works WAY more effectively. And, it costs hardly a thing to make. Oh, and it will last you a long time. Ok. Go!
1 part unsweetened baking cocoa powder
1 part cornstarch
2-5 drops of lemon essential oil
MIX INGREDIENTS BY SHAKING IN A PLASTIC, SEALABLE CONTAINER. APPLY WITH OLD POWDER BRUSH TO ROOTS.
Stay tuned tomorrow for Day 3! We’ll be doing this all real-time folks! We’ve got six videos in six days, you won’t want to miss it!

I actually do have the courage to try this. My hair is red. Do I still use cocoa powder? Is it the color of the cocoa or the properties of it? I really would like to try this. A month, you say. I’ll be tuning in for the rest of the videos.
Thanks for reading, Jessie!
I think you should give it a go by trying a couple tiny test batches of varying ratios of corn starch and cocoa. Both ingredients help to absorb oil, but the cocoa helps everything blend in better for those of us that don’t have platinum blonde hair (thus, avoiding a powdered wig look).
If you have naturally red hair, you should probably use natural unsweetened cocoa to try this, as Dutch processed is going to have less “red” in it visually speaking. In fact, Hershey’s Dutch process cocoa has an almost purple/grey hue to it. If your hair is any close to salon-maroon (mine used to be and I miss it on nights when I remember my forgotten dream to be a dancer on Soul Train), then you might be better off with the Dutch process cocoa.
So much theory, but really it’s just trying to get something close enough in color to blend in as it absorbs. Good luck!
Thanks! Glad I don’t have to use cayenne pepper!
OMGosh! I’m dying!!!! The side effects of that could be disastrous. Hahahahaha!
This is great! I wash my my hair 3 times a week, because I hate getting up earilier then I need too, and my hair damages really easy! I will try some of your tips!
Sounds perfect! Good luck
Do you have suggestions for the blondes out there of a substitute for the cocoa powder.
For platinum blondes, I would use straight cornstarch. For darker blondes, add maybe 1 part of cocoa to every 5 parts of cornstarch, and work up from there. The main thing that the cocoa does is help the mixture to blend in with your hair color and not look like you’re wearing a powdered wig. Good luck!
