Crochet Corner – With an Exclusive Mason Jar Cozy Pattern
Welcome to Crochet Corner! I’m Erin, and I have crochet fever. Each month I’ll be bringing you some crochet goodness whether it be a new pattern, a new project, a great round up or some crochet tips and tricks.
My mom taught me to crochet when I was 10, since then I crocheted here and there but not too seriously. It’s not been until the last few years that I truly fell in love with the craft. And let me tell you, crochet is hot hot hot right now. From décor to toques to cowls to slippers – woolie wears are everywhere. And if you are new to the craft, it’s not too pricey to get into. For under $10.00 you can start off with a couple of hooks and a ball of yarn. Red Heart Yarn has some great instructions on how to learn.
Another hot trend right now is mason jars. One quick search on Pinterest will bring up all kinds of modern day uses for eco-friendly mason jars like storage, décor, gift giving, even salad toting. They aren’t just for jam any more.
What do mason jars have to do with crocheting? Well, why not pretty up that mason jar with a cozy! It will protect the glass when toting your salad to work, keeps your hands cool if using for warm food like my friend Heather’s recipe for overnight oatmeal, also soaks up condensation if you’re using jars for drinks.
Mason Jar Cozy Crochet Pattern (written in US terms)
You will need:
- 100% cotton yarn (I used Bernat Handicrafter)
A size I (5.50mm) crochet hook
A mason jar (pattern is written for a 20 oz jar I recycled from pasta sauce)
To begin – chain 4 and slip stitch to first stitch to form a circle.
Row 1 – chain 1 (does not count as a stitch here or throughout pattern), do 6 single crochet (sc) into circle, join to first sc.
Row 2 – chain 1, do 2 sc into same stitch and each stitch around, join to first sc = 12sc
Row 3 – chain 1, do *2 sc into same stitch, 1 sc into next stitch, repeat from * until you have 18sc. Join to first sc.
Row 4 – chain 1, do *2 sc into same stitch, 1 sc into next 2 stitches, repeat from * until you have 24sc. Join to first sc.
Row 5 – chain 1, do *2 sc into same stitch, 1 sc into next 3 stitches, repeat from * until you have 30sc. Join to first sc.
Row 6 – chain 1, do 1 sc into same stitch and 1 sc into back loop only of each stitch around. Join to first sc. This will create a lip for the bottom of the jar.
Row 7 – chain 1, do 2 sc into same stitch, skip 1 stitch, do 2 sc in the next. Join to first sc.
Row 8 to 25 – repeat row 7. Be sure to count your stitches on each row so you only have 30 each round.
Row 26 – after joining last row, do 1 sc in same stitch and 1 sc in each stitch around, join to first sc. Tie off and weave in ends.
Once finished, I recommend blocking the cozy by sliding it over the jar (it will be snug) and spritz with a light mist of water and let dry. To resize for different jars – for the first few rounds, stop increasing when the circle is the size of the round markings on the bottom of the jar. Then you can start on the “lip row” and continue on with the pattern for the length you want the cozy. To wash, throw in with your regular towel load (no fabric softener) and block it on a jar to dry overnight.
I’d love your feedback, comments and to see your finished cozies! See you next month.
Enjoy, Erin
You may share this pattern with a link back to mrsbrits.blogspot.ca, you can also do anything you wish with your finished creations. There are thousands of crochet patterns online, while I did create this one on my own, if you do find a duplicate pattern it is purely coincidental. I ask you do not copy my instructions, or pictures, and post as your own.

Love this! Super cute
This is such a great idea! There are so many mason jar gifts out there, and this would make them much more special. This would look pretty as a vase, too.
This looks so cute -can’t wait to try!
